Assurance of God’s Love for Us

“If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.” -- John 15:10

Assurance means confidence or certainty. Every husband, every wife, every child, in fact, everybody needs assurance from those they love. There is a story about a married couple getting counseling from their pastor. The wife felt unloved, so the pastor asked the husband if he ever told his bride that he loved her. The husband replied, “Sure, I did that once back when we got married.” Needless to say the wife had her doubts about his love for her, and was seeking assurance that her husband truly loved her.

When we do not obey God’s commands, our assurance that He loves us will diminish. We lose confidence. God still loves us the same, and always will (Romans 8:35-39; Hebrews 13:5), but we will feel distant from Him as our sin erodes the precious fellowship with Christ that only the obedient believer can experience fully. I John 1:9 is the remedy to restore the sweet fellowship and assurance of God’s love that we all must have!

Do you feel less loved by God than you did in times past? Could it be that you have areas of disobedience in your life?
